Singapore Customs gets nod
from employees

Results from the latest employee engagement survey show that most Singapore Customs officers are happy in their jobs and proud of their organisation.

Survey results show that Customs officers are happy in their jobs and proud of their organisation.
In July 2007, Singapore Customs conducted its second employee engagement survey since the Department was reconstituted from the Customs and Excise Department in April 2003. Its last survey was held in 2005.

Over the last few years, the Department underwent significant transformation in its roles and functions. The survey is an important part of its ongoing efforts to build an excellent organisation with a clear sense of purpose, good processes and engaged people.

The survey results indicate that the Department is on the right track. It fared significantly better than both the public sector as well as the private sector in all 11 categories surveyed, chalking up an impressive overall index score of 9% above public sector norms and 18% above overall Singapore employee norms. Its favourable scores were all above 50% and up to 77%.

Singapore Customs’ strengths were apparent in the areas of Leadership/Climate, Supervisory Practices, Job Motivation and Teamwork. Staff felt strongly that senior management communicates a clear vision for the future. They also responded positively to the flexibility to provide good customer service.

Rewards, Performance Management & Feedback and Workload garnered the lowest scores, although Singapore Customs still fared favourably in these areas compared to both the public sector and overall norms.

Moving forward, Singapore Customs will build on its strengths and examine areas for improvement, in order to build an organisation that its people are proud to be a part of.
